Music Program

Rostrata Primary School has a very large music program involving class music time for all year levels, three concert bands, two choirs and a string ensemble.

Experienced & Committed Staff

Band Program

Our outstanding Band Program involves students from Year 4 to Year 6. We offer a range of instruments in the program including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. Students receive professional tuition for 30 minutes per week (usually during school time) and attend one hour band rehearsals once a week before school.

Students are eligible to apply to join the Year 4 Band at the end of Year 3. A Parent Information Session is held during Term 3 for Year 3 parents. During this session parents are informed of the benefits of learning a musical instrument and receive application forms to join the program. Students are informed of their successful application towards the end of Term 4.

Students remain with the Band Program throughout Years 5 and 6. The bands have a high profile within the school and community and regularly play at school assemblies.  When students reach a higher level of proficiency, Year 6, they could perform at the annual WAGSMS Concert at the Crown Theatre and ANZAC Day ceremonies.

If you hear your child frequently humming or singing at home, then they may like to consider joining the choir. Rostrata Primary is fortunate to be able to cater for children who wish to express themselves vocally. We have 2 choirs:

Middle Choir – involving Year 3 and 4 students

Senior Choir – involving Year 5 and 6 students

At the beginning of each year students are given the opportunity to audition during their class music time for a position in the choir. The process involves singing “ABCD” (the alphabet song) and pitch matching. Students who were in the choir the previous year automatically continue in subsequent years, i.e. they do not need to reaudition.

Both choirs have many opportunities to perform at school assemblies and special events.

Strings Program

Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) provides opportunities at Rostrata for students to participate in the Strings Program. A selection process is undertaken during school music sessions and students who are identified will receive a letter from IMSS inviting them to participate:

Violin – testing in term 4 of Year 2 for commencement in Year 3

Viola – testing is biannually in term 4 of Year 2 for commencement in Year 3

Cello – testing in term 4 of Year 3 for commencement in Year 4

The Year 5 and 6 string students and the Year 4 violin and viola students participate in the Rostrata String Ensemble to further develop their musicianship skills. The beginner Year 3 violin and viola students and the beginner Year 4 students join at a time when the instrumental teacher feels they are ready. String students have many performance opportunities throughout their time in the Ensemble including assemblies and the String Orchestra Festival.
